Why Montessori Calls It “Work” — Not Play!
And why your child LOVES it!
Did you know?
When your child is “playing,” they’re actually doing important work!
Dr. Montessori said: “The greater part of what you call play is really work.”
So what does “work” mean in Montessori?
Respect — Their activity has purpose
Focus — Repetition builds concentration
Growth — Every action shapes independence J
oy — Meaningful work feels good!
Look at your child’s play differently!
When they are:
• building the same tower 10 times
• pouring water again and again
• lining up cars
• exploring beads or blocks
They’re not “just playing” — they’re working to build themselves.
Make Mornings Easier!
Try saying: “You go to school and do your work, and I’ll go to the office and do mine.”
This simple shift makes transitions smoother!
At Ekaiva Montessori… We honour the child’s play as meaningful work. We observe, guide gently, and respect their natural curiosity and development.
