The Brown Stairs – A Key Montessori Material

The Brown Stairs, also called the Broad Stair, is a classic Montessori material designed to help children understand size, dimension, and visual discrimination. It consists of ten wooden prisms, all the same length but varying in width and height, which children arrange from largest to smallest.

Purpose: It develops early math skills, fine motor coordination, and concentration while strengthening a child's ability to perceive size differences.

Age Group: Ideal for children 3 years and up, typically used in Montessori classrooms.

For Home Use? Not necessary unless home-schooling.

The Brown Stairs are not ordinary building blocks. They serve a specific educational purpose in a Montessori setting, helping children develop visual discrimination, coordination, and early math skills. These materials are carefully presented to guide structured learning and are not meant for open-ended play.

At Ekaiva Montessori, we use these hands-on materials to provide a meaningful and structured learning experience, ensuring that every child builds a strong foundation for future growth. #MontessoriEducation
