Reward Charts and Montessori: Encouraging Children from Within
As parents, we all want to encourage positive habits in our children—whether it's brushing teeth, putting away toys, following routines, or becoming more independent.
A common tool used in many homes is the Reward Chart. But did you know that Montessori education takes a different perspective?
Dr. Maria Montessori believed that children are naturally motivated to learn, grow, and master new skills. She emphasized the importance of developing intrinsic motivation—the inner satisfaction that comes from accomplishing something meaningful.
She famously said: "There is no punishment or reward in our schools to interfere with the joy in the work itself. The only reward is in the completion of the work."
When children learn because they are curious, interested, and proud of their own achievements, they develop stronger self-discipline, confidence, and character.
Why Montessori Prefers Intrinsic Motivation
Children are naturally driven to:
Explore their environment
Master new skills
Become independent
Contribute meaningfully to their surroundings
When motivation comes from within, learning becomes joyful and lasting.
Can Reward Charts Still Be Helpful?
While Montessori classrooms generally avoid reward charts, they can sometimes be useful as a short term support tool, especially when:
✔ Establishing a new routine (bedtime, morning routine)
✔ Learning a specific skill (brushing teeth, organizing belongings)
✔ Supporting transitions (starting school, moving homes)
✔ Encouraging consistency in already learned behaviours
However, reward charts work best when they focus on a specific and achievable goal rather than vague expectations such as "being good."
Important Considerations
Children under 3 years of age often live in the present moment and may not fully understand delayed rewards.
Avoid using rewards to control emotions. Feelings such as sadness, frustration, or disappointment are natural and should be acknowledged, not rewarded away.
Keep goals realistic and age-appropriate so children experience success and confidence.
Focus on one habit at a time to avoid pressure and frustration.
The Montessori Way
At Ekaiva Montessori, we focus on nurturing children's natural desire to learn rather than encouraging learning through rewards and punishments. Our prepared environment allows children to experience the joy of achievement, the satisfaction of completing a task, and the confidence that comes from genuine effort.
We believe that the greatest reward for a child is not a sticker or a star—but the smile that comes from saying:
"I did it myself."
Ekaiva Montessori Where independence, confidence, and a lifelong love for learning begin.
